Mens Silk Slippers c1620

Mens indoor slippers or mules with gold trim. Lond square toes like these were fashionable in the early 1600's.
The fabric is deep purple red that was created by using cochineal, a dye made from dry crushed insects. They were donated to the museum in 1947 by Sir Roger & Lady Halton of Halton Park near Bolton and are the oldest items in the museum costume collection.
