1.65m Spent on Mink
It was revealed that 1.65m had been spent on an eradication programme, to rid the Western Isles of mink, and that to date only 232 animals in 18 months have been caught.
Conservationists defended themselves by saying that the cull has brought other benefits such as increasing stocks of salmon and trout, but critics say that even when these are taken into account the bill worked out at just over £2,000 for each culled mink. This is Britain ’s largest alien species eradication programme.
